i honestly don't think Ashfur had to go as far as to try killing Squirrelflight's family. Who knows, if Hollyleaf DIDN'T kill him, he may have tryed killing Leafpool, or Brambleclaw/star, or maybe even Squirrelflight herself. Well, maybe not THAT far, but still.
