I recommend Dragon Quest 9, it's one of the more accessible and a great introduction to the series.

I was just going to recommend 9 as well. 8 is also fairly accesible, but its coming to 3ds sometime soonish...in japan, no idea if we're getting it. But if you want one to start, 9 I highly recommend as well.
