Fsr I see the battle system as a fusion of Star Ocean, Kingdom Hearts, and Final Fantasy xD I'm more for JRPG or TRPG though.

Bottom left:
green bar - life
blue bar - mana
yellow bar and yellow circle - experience and level
purple bar - familiar gauge (when full allows to perform a special familiar attack)
Bottom right:
L - spell shortcuts (L plus a/b/x/y)
R - menu (holding R allows to use the circle pad to browse)
magic - open the magic type menu
familiar - perform familiar actions
item - use/create items (for example, right now Zeph is brewing a potion)
party - party actions (chat, etc)
Between - basic actions (depend on chosen magic types/skills)
