Dug up an old creature design of mine, behold the Mimic Baboon. They're meant to be a realistic take on werewolves, sort of an alternate history creature. These primates thrived in Southern Europe and Northern Africa and are believed to now be extinct. Primarily carnivourous and very agressive, they had an uncanny way of altering the color patterns on their palms, tails, and bellies to crudely mimic some spechies.

These primates evolved to cater to a predatory diet of ambushing and out-running prey in short sudden chases. It's overly long limbs allow for faster galloping on four legs, while also giving it an almost canine outline. Strangely they evolved long prehensile-bushy tails, a paradox amongst Old-World Primates. Amongst the southern populations they are known for mimicing their choosen prey of local herbivores, while northern populations tend to prey upon humans. Hunting nocturnally, they would often use their tails and mimicry to appear as if they were local travelers on the road. From a distance a villager would not notice anything strange about the stumbling traveller in the darkness, but only in proper light would they see something amiss. When close enough the primates would reveal their true shapes and attack, often chasing fleeing prey for short distances. Frantic villages would later tell tales of men changing into horrible wolfish beasts at the light of the moon.....

As the stories and tales grew, so did the details of the myth. These "loup-garou" as they were soon called, were soon rumored to be cursed men whom were doomed to become wolves during the fullmoon. Villagers soon spoke of herbs and metals to ward away these creatures, though in truth all were useless to the strange baboons. Now to modern eyes we may feel it to be foolish for anyone to mistake a baboon for a wolf, but to an uneducated peasent of the Dark Ages whom has never even seen a baboon, they certainly could easily be mistaken for some strange looking wolf.
Basically this is a "realistic" take on werewolves, what do you think?
