When his friend is faced with an unimaginable loss and begins to lose themself. They turn to the taboo of alchemy, Human-Transmutation. Not allowing his friend to take the risk of the Law of Equivalent Exchange, he talks her out of it. Although on a dark night through secrecy in hopes of making her happy again. He tries to bring back her loved one to only fall victim to it's mystery and lose his lower jaw. After surgery, with the help of a friend who is an automail expert he was able to be saved

When wind was caught of this incident. He was enlisted by General Mustang, as means of service for commiting the crime of Human-Transmutation, and for his skill to do so. It wasn't long till he rose up the ranks and was given the alias "Iron-Jaw". He still takes the time to visit his friend often, after every mission he completes and days off.
