He was named Merlin in hopes that he'd become a great sorcerer like the famous wizard Merlin. It didn't work.

He lived alone in the woods and didn't have anyone to teach himself anything about magic but himself. Because of this he is honestly awful at magic right now (his clothes suffered for it) and used the schools re-enrollment period to possibly get someone to help.
