i can't necessarily give you any advice, but go for a class you like, i guess??? anything but lord/great lord though (since that's against the rules). and you DO have to pick where they're from/what army they're in (ylisse, valm, plegia, regna ferox, etc.)

the most important part of character designing is really just to have fun when creating your characters! you're designing them, so it's basically your rules with a little bit of guidelines. you want a male hero in pink armor? go for it! you want a genderfluid wyvern rider? hell yeah!
"fitting in" isn't really a big deal. we'd love to have you anyways, and i'm sure that whatever you come up with will be great! ★⌒(●ゝω・)ｂ
