Ash is moving foward. He does a little bit better in every league he enters. Although it would seem that the intellegence he had in Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh is gone and his knowledge has reverted back to that of his learning days in Kanto, but that was likely due to the absence of a new trainer accompanying him throughout Unova. There is no Hilda/Hilbert in the anime and so they just made Ash the noob. Btw, I love this painting, and I loved the anime trailer too.

Why would they make him start over? It's kind of strange, but that seems to keep the series alive--to the creators, of course! I love this, BTW! : D
