You could try complementary colors (just look up color schemes, they really help art stand out and look pleasing to the eye). Also, the water could be more reflective to maybe acheive a more material feel (idk).
Anyway, I love how simplistic this composition is!
If the light hits that lower tree root, center of the tree, light theoretically should bounce and play highlights on the dirt/stones in that path a good ways towards us, select the lighted path color on super low opacity and give it a try!!
Dance in some arcs as stones, upside down "U"'s under the lanterns, on the path... slanted arcs as you stroke to the right... im not good with words, u understand what im trying to say?

Great picture. There's a good tutorial by @Birdy that talks all about colour theory, it's good stuff, and real simple.
