Onyx was fused with another gem in the same way Garnet is. He was trapped in a mirror for the same reason Lapis was (headcanon); punishment for fusion. They force the mirror to watch the other's death so that's all they can replay. Years later, a human male releases him. He fabricates a form based off his rescuer. That's why it's male.
