The reason he is a mystery is because he's been in coma for the last 2 years-keeping it a secret from everyone by using his ability-bilocation. Which allows him to be in the same places at once.
But because he has limited time, he skips majority of the lessons and disappears which labeled him as a delinquent. Not only that, he is unable to participate club activities and when he does, his only there for a really short time or to talk with Minato-sensei.
The reasons behind his coma was because a spirt dropped a ceramic vase on his head during a paranormal invistigation with Minato-sensei and paranormal researchers. To add to his injury, as he fell down-the floor bellow him was rotting and old causing him to fall down on concrete floor.
