Slate was jealous of the attention Ivan & Kelvin got from his parents, even though he knew they were younger. Added to that, to him, it seemed like he trusted Verde more than his own father.
But when Verde died, Slate ran away with Ivan because he was sick of living "unnoticed". He constanly got into trouble which upset him as well, so that gave him another reason to leave.
Slate was 7 when he left his home and his hair color originally blonde, with blue eyes.
But one day, when he was still 7 and Ivan was 6, Ivan accidentally set off his spell unknowingly, and Slate lost all of his memories. His hair turned brown & had purple eyes as the result, since the way Ivan cast it on him was different. Added to that, his was pernament.
Slate could still talk & walk/run, but he forgot how to read and write, and his speech was a little "choppy".
But Ivan re-taught him how to read & how to write & do math. And then 1 of Slate's common hobbies became reading & writing in a journal.

The normal Slate everyone sees now is actually a lot quieter and he gets along very well with Ivan. He gave him the nickname "Amnesia" when he (for some reason) couldn't say "Ivan". He hardly gets into to trouble, and he acts more responsible, currently 16 years old. (Ivan is 15 right now.)
But Slate barely asks about his past anymore & just follows Ivan around.
