I've actually never heard about firebirds being a mythical creature until I got this mythology book when I was a kid. The best way to describe a firebird is a fiery coloured version of a peacock. They're known to be nocturnal creatures as well. When they sing, pearls spill from it's beak. Hearing it's song can heal the sick and help the blind see. The firebird also gives magical apples as gifts. Russians believe that eating an apple from a firebird will make you young and beautiful forever.
The firebird is known from a Russian folktale called "Slavic folklore" (I think that's what it's called).
