Chalcedony did this fusion, not out of love, it was because she was badly injured.

During the Gem War, the Homeworld Gems have perfected fusion technology so fusions will be 100 percent stable. The 2 gems who fuse permenaently have their gems also fused together, so they only have 1 gem.

They called her General Chalcedony, and she was considered one of greatest Homeworld generals in her time. During the battle of Carnelian's Hill, Pearl or a pearl, part of Rose's Army, disguised herself as Agate.

Agate was General Chalcedony's second-in-command, and is fairly tall and lanky, like Pearl.

The disguised Pearl took her replica of Agate's knife and sliced off most of Chalcedony's right arm, and made several cuts and lacerations to other parts of her body, such as her face.

General Chalcedony was declared unfit to lead the Homeworld Army. She was ordered to report to her superior, Yellow Diamond. Yellow Diamond told the General that if she wanted to fight, she would have to permanently fuse with her second-in-command, Agate.

This would repair her wounds and severed arm, but she and Agate would never be 2 gems again. Headstrong as she was, General Chalcedony decided to go through with the process.

Yellow Diamond supplied the energy for the machine. The fusion would be stronger and faster than a regular gem, but would appear to be 1 gem.

That's a cool idea, but before garnet sang that song she said she was against fusions, so it wouldn't really make sense.

To Cloud22: I agree with you,because I saw that episode of Steven Universe,but in the theory, the fusion caused them to be one gem,(Jasper) and in my opinion of the theory,maybe memories got messed up or something so she doesn't recall being a fusion herself and then hence the episode saying that fusing makes weak gems strong.
So to sum it up with the episode Jasper thinks she's stronger than Garnet(A fusion),because unfused gems are 'weak' but doesn't recall that she's strong because she was a fusion of Agate and Chalcedony.
