Long story short
Maybe I'll explain in better detail later but
A rather gross group of Valmese soldiers wandered into their village looking for shelter some ten years ago
Naturally villagers showed them hospitality and kindness
Women and sometimes kids would disappear for a night, show up the next day looking scared out of their minds, avoiding the soldiers
Aland naturally got suspicious and started snooping
Soldiers caught him, tied him down and whipped him into submission, literally
Said if he told anyone, Rusalka was next
Of course
So he said nothing
Treated himself so that Rus wouldn't know
Because she'd have never left it alone
And basically Aland never trusted soldiers even after ten years and joining the army himself
Though... He mostly joined because Rus did
