This is definately a good start. One thing that might help is if you try coloring on the layer behind the one with the outline, then merge the outline on top of the other layer. This will make it much easier and cleaner looking. If you need help understanding, check out a replay of some of my drawings. :)

The characters you mentioned for the contest would be perfectly fine. To, enter, just post a comment when you're done. Try to be creative with how you do the drawing and you'll have a better chance of winning. :D
