The only thing that really got me where I was today was to keep practising and keep trying!
I drew pretty much whenever I had the time and I filled at least 4 sketchbooks :D
I know it might sound a little cheesy, but thats how I managed to draw ponies
(sorry to be so vague, if there's anything else you want to know, please ask!)
