Witch was originally the term for people who opposed/were exiled from the Dreaming Orthrodoxy (now called the Dreaming Council). The Orthrodoxy at first believed that the Dreaming should only be a thing a select few can do and pushed the notion to get children dejeweled before or after they awakened (its possible to remove a gem but it's an extremely painful process that has a very low survival rate. Those things are embedded veeerry deep in ya body. Plus I dont know why someone would willing get their jewel removed. anyhow...). The Orthrodoxy also banned artificial magic. The first couple of witches were a group of girls who used to be Council members but then they were like "hey this is kinda icky" and broke away from it, and started using artificial magic along with their own natural magic to produce powerful spells and concoctions

The first couple of witches were like herbalist and spent a lot of time tending to the sick. they created the first real medicine in Eidelheide and many of their discoveries are still very effective today.
Also the Dreaming Council is currently a group of people who pretty much decide the law on dreaming, name everything, junk like that. A lot of people still dislike them bc they're kinda really weird and mysterious but it's not like they can do anything (especially considering they're a major money source for dreaming guilds across the world.) The council building is located inbetween dimensions and has a couple of doors leading to it scattered about the Worlds.
Also!! Eddettie doesn't like 'em but has to do business with them from time to time, specifically the Council leader, a weird girl with weird hair.
