and im not sure what you mean by online play? as far as being able to play with ANYONE with fantasy life (like you can with pokemon X/Y) i don't think so, but ik you can play with anyone on your friends list with fantasy life, there's a chat like acnl and from what i've seen on eshop it looks awsome.

yee its only with ppl on your friend list but you can chat and unlike alot of games where you're stuck in one small spot you can go through the whole game together and fight or whateverz.
