in japan the buddhist temples ring their bells one hundred and eight times at midnight on new years eve
there is a common popular belief in japan that human beings are made up of one hundred and eight evil desires and each striking of the bells can remove one
thus we japanese welcome the new year with refreshed feelings
many temples partake in this ceremony and allow people to watch or actually participate in ringing the bell
