Hmm. That's a very interesting theory. When I got into FMA:B the truth really interested me too. I sorta based this concept on the "Blank Dream Stage" of my own series. It's where a danlin has a deep sleep dream and they dream of themselves being in a blank,white space. Around there is a being known as Yao Yang, and they can interact with him/them.

The portals are connected because their owners are from the same wo.mb.
A lot of the Alchemy references in FMA are actually based on Shamanic and Alchemic mythology and spiritualism. It'd take me too long to explain it all.
