Mario got all the right buffs in smash, in fighting games, you need sort of a neutral go to character, usually called shotoclones, like ryu or ken in SF. Mario just wasnt very good in brawl, he needed tombe a character that portrayed the mechanics of the game. and could be mastered at the same time, now his up smash has super armor, his fireballs have better arc, his recovery matters more now, and he can combo like a boss. He'll definitely fare well competively

@scorch: yeah, Mario kicks some serious a$$ in this one :p I only have a problem with one of the fighters though.. Luigi. WAY too slow for me...even the CPU can't make it to the edge sometimes. I can't play as him unless i set it on custom, because i had to make him faster :/ but, i do like how they made his jump animation; little mario bros 2 refrence in it :p

luigi's final smash is also good too :b (better than his random hippi dome in brawl.. )
