Normally, what I suggest is studying other people"s paintings and take it step by step. when it comes to shading, adding warm colors like yellow, orange, or greenish yellow does great for lit areas. where cool colors like blue or violet do great at making shadows. Black doesn't shade yellow objects near as well as red or orange. Just a little food for thought.
