"D-mmit!" I winced at the sharpness in his voice. He wasn't that loud, but my ears were animal ears, picking up the smallest sounds possibly made. "D-mn. It." he cussed again, finally drawing my attention. I rolled over on the floor and looked up at him sleepily. We were in our bedroom we shared, and it was in the middle of the night. /I/ had been sleeping, while /he/ had been complaining about something I'd yet to find out. "What are you griping about, Nathan?" I snapped. He was standing beside my bed, facing away from me. When he heard me speak he turned and squinted through the darkness at me, emerald eyes glowing like a cat's. "Eh?" He mumbled kind of dazed, like he'd been in a trance. I held my silence for a moment, observing how tired he looked. His ebon hair was ruffled and skewed across his face, his lip piercing trembled, he was in a wrinkled pair of pjs, and he slumped more than usual. He definitely looked like a tired piece of crap. So I told him that. --
"Oh, yeah, thanks." Nathan grumbled, sitting on the edge of my bed. I in turn sat up and scratched halfheartedly on one of my ears. He sighed loudly, a sign he was about to confess his problems. "Well, Khy, I was trying to come up with a way to pay the rent." I blinked, thinking about this problem as well now. "Well, looks like Alice and you will have to get jobs, while I play the housewife role. I can't be seen in public." Nathan glanced back at me. "Of course you can't. But making Alice get a job is kinda harsh. She's so young. And kindhearted. I don't want an innocent girl out there in the waste of the world." I layed my hand lightly on his shoulder. "It'll be okay. She's tougher than you think."
