Carina's sky blue eyes shot open, accompanied by a fast intake of breath. She stared at the ceiling for a while as she waited for herself to calm down. The screams still echoed in her head, reluctant to subside.
Once they finally ceased, fading away into nothing, Carina sat up. Her back ached from lying on the worn mattress. It's old, rusted springs creaked as she moved.
The room was damp and dark. The only source of light came from above. Rouge rays of daylight shone through the small holes in the cement ceiling, or ground depending on what floor you were on. The rays illuminated thick dust particles that danced through the mouldy air, never seeming to to settle with the rest.
Treading carefully, Carina went to a table at the far end of the room and lit the small oil lamp that sat there. A warm glow flowed through the room, bouncing off the brick walls. Most of the plaster had cracked and broken off by now.

Across from Carina's bed was another one. In it lay her younger cousin Melody who was still sound asleep. As much as Carina wanted to let her stay this way, she knew they had to go meet the others as soon as possible. Much like luck, time wasn't on their side.
Carina came over to the bedside.
"Melody? Come on, wakey wakey" she said as she shook her gently.
Melody murmured then rolled over, her emerald eyes half open.
"Morning already?" she asked with a small yawn.

"Afraid so. And if we don't go soon, there'll be too many guards" Carina answered with a slight edge to her voice.
Melody nodded and got up. She slipped her black music note medallion over her head then took the hooded cloak Carina handed her. She quickly wrapped it around herself.
Carina did the same before both headed for the stairs that led up to the ground floor.

The hinges of the trapdoor creaked as Carina pushed it up and held it open for Melody. She came up and peered out from behind the large crate that shielded then from view. She scanned the windows, some of which were boarded up. No one seemed to be outside.
"All clear" Melody reported as Carina closed the trapdoor shut.
She nodded"Right, let's get moving"
With that the two left the warehouse.
Since Herobrine came into power, like many not wealthy enough to keep their homes, Carina and Melody Alester had no choice but to move to the outer part of the city nearest the towering walls. The two made their residence in the basement of an abandoned warehouse. They chose this because it was well hidden, which was exactly what they had needed.

Herobrine's rule over what he now called Hellsted, had brought about much change. Food was becoming scarce and sickness was widespread. All forms of literature, music and art had been banned. Only crimes directly against or towards the king were dealt with, making the city a dangerous place to live. But no one had a choice. The city's four main gates were on constant guard. Some thought it was mad, ridiculous even, but few dared say it aloud. Fewer still were prepared to do something about it, to rise up and take back their rights. To these few, it was time for change. And that time was now.
