L always had the weirdest smiles. He was also (spoilers, oh noez!) was the smartest guy in the series. He DID find out who Kira was, and Light only avoided him by some crazy technicalities with the notebook and some manipulation of someone who wasn't supposed to exist in the human world. It took both Near AND Mello to rediscover Kira's identity, and even then on top of what L already found out. And even then, they would've been death-note'd had Light not gotten shot by someone entirely different.
