Before you upload a painting, there's a button that says "private". I'm not really sure what it does, is there anyone out there who knows?

It means that only you can see it. It's useful if something happened to your 3DS, because you can upload all your pics as private in case something happened to your 3DS, and there are no restrictions on how many pics you can upload in a day if you upload them that way. It's also useful if you want to save one of your pics in high quality but don't want to upload them public.
