I traced a lot too when I was younger... People say traceing is bad but I think it helps you grap hold a little easyer when your self taught.
I never heard of the shadow shaping before... I'll have to try it sometime. Great job! ^^

Its totally fine if you do it on your tablet. I am using my DS since the bottom screen is still functional, but I am using my tablet more than I use my DS now a days.
