Santa Lucia by elibii
Here in Italy, at least in some regions, it's Saint Lucia who brings presents to the children on 13th December.
Her story is extremely sad. She was a kind, beautiful young woman who loved children above everything else. One day a greedy man asked her in marriage, but she refused, saying she wanted to stay with her beloved children. In revenge, the greedy man kidnapped her, put her in jail and tortured her. In the end he took her eyes out, so that she couldn't see her children anymore. (Continue)

And so she died.
Fact is, that when I was a child my parents (and others too) always told me that Santa Lucia would make me blind, or worse take my eyes out, if I ever saw her wandering in my house while bringing presents!! They told me that she always had her eyes in the palm of her hand (and she had a donkey, but that isn't that scary ;D) and I was so exited/terrified the night before the 13th!!!
