middle school kids having racial discussion by Eph 5:8

"Everyone thinks I'm good at math 'cause I'm Asian"

"But you are good at math."

"That is not the POINT"

"I mean at least people see you and think you're smart. People prob'ly see me and think I'm a lazy kid who does illegal stuff for fun"

"Dude stop"

"Okay"

"And people assume that I know how to speak Chinese"

"So? That's pretty legit I know how to speak black"

"But I betcha you can't speak Swahili"

"What the heck is Swahili"

"Yeah EXACTLY"

Actually though African culture and African-American culture are two completely separate things so Swahili doesn't actually have anything to do with this

i guess i know what you mean. i'm mexican, and when people talk about my people, they think we're drug dealers, or gangsters or something. i don't like that at all.

^ Yeah, yeah! That's totally what I'm getting at.

Also, when people just assume that all Hispanics are Mexican. Because someone can be Hispanic and not actually be from Mexico.

It's rare to see me talk at school, and once this girl asked me, "Do you not speak because you can only speak Spanish?" and when I nodded my head no, she kept asking me if I can speak all these other languages (like French, Chinese, etc.) and when I replied "The only language I know how to speak is English." she made a big deal out of it.

...What do I even say to that?

Anyway, if you actually didn't know how to speak English, then how would you be expected to know what she was saying to you...

Freshman year, in Spanish 1 class, the advanced Spanish class visited to help tutor all of us with our Spanish. Naturally, many of the advanced students were Hispanic, since Spanish is spoken by Hispanic people. Because of that some kid felt it necessary to point out that "dude, they're all Mexicans". :P Why.

Wow, so I guess I'd fit right in there. Yeah, I live in a little town that is 80 percent white.
