Carina woke with a start. It took her a few seconds to remember where she was, that she was in Battlemount, not Witherville.
There was a soft beeping sound echoing through the room from an alarm hidden within the walls. Although it was a gentle sound, it was enough to awake those who heard it. The beeping subsided after twenty seconds.
As Carina got up and made her bed, another sound bounced through a speaker on the wall.
"Ding-ding-ding-diiing"

Seconds later, the game master's voice came through.
"Good morning everyone! I hope you slept well because you've got a big day ahead of you. The current time is now 9:00am. Breakfast will be served in the dining hall from 9:30am to 10:30am. You are then to depart for your designated compartments at 12:30am which are located beneath the arena. The game will begin at 1:00pm sharp. See you there" the game master finished his announcement.

"1:00pm huh?" Carina thought.

She looked over at a digital, 24-hour clock on the wall. On it, one o'clock would be 13:00.
"Again with the thirteen" she thought, remembering the number of the train that brought her to Battlemount.
However she decided it was merely coincidence and pushed the thought to the back of her mind. She had other things to deal with.

The dining hall was buzzing with energy. Everyone was pumped and excited for the day ahead.
The room had a large table running down the middle of the floor. There were eleven seats on each side with another two on the ends. There were all kinds of food spread out on the wooden surface. Cereals, bread, cold meat, fruit, everything. Carina took a seat near one end of the table. Two seats down from her sat Ian who was tucking into a cake. (How he got one was a mystery. Carina couldn't see any on the table) Across from her sat Tyler, eating a baked potato. Beside him was Bashur. He had a shocked expression as he watched Adam reach for a slice of melon.
"Don't mind me Bash!" he exclaimed and laughed out loud.
Some of the others chimed in. Bashur wanted to say, or rather yell something at him but turned away instead. He'd get Adam back in the game.

As more people sat down for breakfast, the noise levels rose as more conversations were started.
Carina was a bit disappointed when someone else took the last seat beside her before E, the girl she'd met yesterday. Carina spotted her at the far end of the table.
With no one to really talk to, she let her mind wonder, picking up tidbits of conversation. She began to hear the word 'team' floating about. Teaming with someone was something Carina rarely considered. However, given the circumstances of who was competing, Mitch and Jerome in particular, maybe this would be one of those rare times. In this game, being in a team could make all the difference.

12:55

Carina was standing with her back to the wall. She only had to wait five more minutes before the game began. As pure adrenalin started rushing through her, she ran over her and E's plan.
After breakfast the two had met up and agreed to team. They made a plan that would hopefully get them to the deathmatch. It was simple. Avoid the centre, search for supplies and only fight when needed.
At 12:30, all twenty four players had been lead to their own underground compartment which were located directly below the centre of the arena.
Carina had been taken to hers by the same uniformed woman who'd met her at Witherville station. The woman's green eyes seemed even more pale than they were the day before.
"Give me your wrist please" she said in a flat tone, breaking the silence.
Finding this completely normal, Carina nodded and held up her left arm, rolling up her blue and white stripped sleeve. The woman strapped on a wrist band. There was a click as the two ends fused shut. Carina studied the band. It was certainly not the kind she was used to. The normal ender pearl band was a cyan colour with an ender pearl engraved in it's centre. This band however was a deep red-grey colour with a piece of crystallised redstone at it's centre. Carina could make out some more redstone lining the edges. Something wasn't right here

There were three minutes left. The woman ushered her to the glass tube.
"W-wait! I think there's been a mistake! These aren't ender pearl wrist bands. Without them we can't teleport out of the arena!" Carina explained in a rush.
The glass door closed.
"That's the point" the uniformed woman answered, her voice laced with an icy tone.
Carina's eyes widened. The platform she stood on began to rise. When she broke through the surface, she looked around. All the others had the same redstone bands snaked around their wrists. Most had expressions of surprise and confusion.
This was no mistake.

There were two minutes left. Before anyone could say anything, a beam of light shot up from the centre. The beam stretched out and a blue, flickering hologram appeared. The game master came into view.
"Time is short so I'll cut to the chase. You've probably noticed that the wrist bands you're wearing are not what you're used to. That's because this game is different. This is real survival" he paused and lifted up a band the same as the ones they were wearing.
"These bands are lined with explosives. They will be detonated if the player wearing it attempts to remove it at the fuse point or, more importantly, if they refuse to fight. I know that sounds bad but at least you'll go out with a bang!" the game master chuckled. He made no attempt to hide the evil and insanity of his voice.

"This is an outrage! You mean to tell us we must fight to the death? We must kill one another for your sick entertainment?!" someone exclaimed.

"Well that's one way to put it" the game master answered with a smirk.
If they could see his eyes they'd be narrowed, but they were hidden behind black shades.
"This is crazy! You can't possibly expect us to do this!" the same person shot back.
"Are you refusing to fight?" the game master asked simply.
"Y-yes! I won't stand for this! You're out of your mind!" the person answered.
The game master sat back in his chair. "Let this be an example" he said and nodded to someone out of view.
The person's eyes widened. The chunk of redstone began to glow and in a split second, the band exploded. Whatever was left of the person was thrown back off their platform and now lay still in several small pools of blood.
Twenty three pairs of eyes stared in shock, unable to take in what had just happened. The deathly silence was only broken by the game master's sinister voice.
"Anyone else not feel like fighting today? No? Good. Then let the countdown begin. May the best player win" he told them, then laughed again.

The hologram disappeared. The countdown began. A heavy beeping sound rang throughout the centre.

Carina's mind was racing. "Are they really going to do this?! There must be some other way!"

There were only twenty seconds left.
She looked over at the remains of the person.
"Who am I kidding? We don't have a choice!" she thought.
Fifteen seconds.
Carina shook her head in disbelief. "This can't be happening....it can't..."

But it was.
When the final beep sounded, she'd expected there to be hesitation among the others, but there was no such thing.
Most rocketed from their platforms to centre, grabbing what they could. Others couldn't move.
And then it began.

There was a scream as someone staggered back, a large gash in their chest. Crimson quickly spread down their jacket before they collapsed.
A cannon went off.
Seeing the person fall made Carina turn and run to the forest . Her legs were numb and her mind was a mess. She flinched, hearing the cannon go off again. The mass of green leaves and bark of trees became a blur as she rushed on.
Boom! Another life had been taken.
Carina looked up and spotted a chest half hidden by leaves. She quickly climbed up into the tree. From the top, she could see the centre. Pools of crimson littered the area.
Carina's eyes widened. The reality was slowly catching up on her.
The prize of winning was not gold, or fame. It was your own life.
For this was the Ultimate Survival Games.
