Its not because they were not enough, its because Japan tend to like newer and trendier stuff. But that doesnt mean they dislike the older Pokemon. All 649 Pokemon are equal in my book, and anyone who dislikes certain Pokemon because they're too old or too new was never a "true" Pokemon fan to begin with. I love the Unova region Pokemon just as much as the original Kanto region Pokemon, and any true Pokemon fan would say the same.

By the way, I stay updated on the anime, and I'm pretty sure Ash's Pikachu loves his new Unova region friends.

Good points, and, to tell you the truth, I think my favorite plot was actually gen 3. I've played games from all the regions and they're all good. Plus, if they don't make new places and pokemon, how would they sell games and merchandise...
I think the 1st generarion will always just have a special place in my heart, especially Bulbasaur, my first pokemon ever.
