it involves copying a layer. to experiment draw a simple picture (like a sphere or something) use the copy layer function to make a duplicate onto the next layer. Go to the layer closer to the screen and use the eraser on the most transparent setting (so it's barely erasing) Erase away at the edges where you want the 3d to blend backwards. For example if you do a circle erase the very edges of the circle. The more you erase the more it goes backwards. In order for this to work your 3d setting shouldn't be up the whole way, maybe on half or less. Give it a try and let me know if that made sense :)
