i realize i've never explained the kings and queens of Clad so here goes!!
the kings and queens (k&q) are not elected but chosen by fate. every k&q has a shared soul called the "Partem" which travels from caretaker to next. when the previous owner expires it finds a new life form to occupy which can be anything that's conscious. once the Partem has an occupant it makes said living thing into a super form of itself. ie the current queen is a winged spider. when she was born the previous king had died at that precise moment and so the Partem tracked down the first living being it could find and took over.
each k&q has a unique emotion that triggers a transformation that has something to do with their original form. Cygnus (as shown above) was born a human, but because she has the Partem, she is a super human. when she is genuinely happy she becomes more "human" ie. a natural hair and eye color shows, she gets rosy cheeks etc.
the current queen is a winged spider. her transformation is triggered by anger and when it does happen (which is often for her) she sprouts wings out of her back and grows 4 extra eyes.
k&q live for an estimated 4OO years and stay looking around 2O years old their entire life
