The only reason I do it is because my ponies tend to have long hair that covers half of their eyes up. So I make it semi-see-through, so you can see their eyes better, as well as their emotions, since eyes help you tell somethings emotions.
I'm really bad at explaining things, but that's my reason.

I always assumed the 'see-through hair' thing is to showthe character's eyes, to help depict their emotion. Or people just like making the eyes visible.
