Doctor Rose's parents weren't home a lot when she was little, so she was almost always accompanied by an adult Pokemon caretaker. One day, Rose discovered Pokemon battle tournaments while channel surfing, and she had tuned in right when the legendary battle between Lightning the Sawk and Thunder the Throh had started. Rose's eyes lit up as history was made in front of her 7 yr. old eyes. She decided she wanted to enter a Pokemon tournament 1 day, with a Sawk as strong as Lightning.
