Actually that is the point of a theme song, something short and catchy so the person can identify the game or show just by listening to it! for example:
if you put on the theme song of Super Mario Bros, Pokemon or Jonny Test (I bet no one knows what that is) And told me to guess what show/game it belongs to, I would get it right automaticaly.

I think a good theme song also fits a television series if it corresponds to the feeling of the show. If it portrays a good amount of action, the theme could involve a good amount of tough beats and melodies. That isn't always the case, of course. ; )

Do non-vocal theme songs like Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom - Nuclear Fusion count? xD

@ Alex: Golden Sun BGMs are boss. No exceptions ^u^ but my favorite is Gaaro(d'I spell that right?) Village's theme(GS,LA). Somber flute and mellow strings, lovely ^u^ I used to sleep to it.

@Jouigi: You know the most basic use of theme songs are to (in collaberation with a short video clip) help people understand the main idea behind the show and cut down on production costs. Thats 2 - 5 minutes per episode that's already filled. Yay, lazy people!
