Carson scowled as he thhrew what little belongings he had into an old backpack. Across the room, his brother was doing the same. 'We'll never survive out there.' he told himself. He picked up a shirt and folded it. Suddenly, it caught fire. Oh yes, how could he forget? His newfound powers. What was he going to do with those?

Caiden had just discovered his powers, too.
That's why they were leaving. Carson remembered the General's words very clearly:
"I can do whatever I want, boy! You are leaving!"
Being called 'boy' had always made Carson mad. He gripped a pair of pants tightly. His anger set them ablaze and he threw them on top of the pile of smoldering clothes with a grunt. Without even turning around, his brother extinguished his flames.
"How can you have such a grip on your powers already?! You've had yours for twenty minutes! I've had mine all day and have no idea how to use them!" Carson raged, his fingertips sending sparks and smoke flying.
"Well, for one thing, ice is easier to handle than fire. And second, our powers act up when we feel angry or threatened. You are mostly anger." Caiden answered matter-of-factly.
Carson knew when he lost an argument. He turned back to the task at hand, throwing shirts and pants and socks into his bag annd muttering to himself.

Twenty minutes later, Carson and Caiden were standing at the gates of the camp. They had blankets from their beds wrapped around their shoulders and their bags hanging from their backs.
"Here we go, Carson." Caiden sighed. "Are you ready?"
Wanting to impress his brother, Carson tried to sound as tough as possible as he said, "I'm ready for anything!" but it came out as more of a squeak.
"Here we go." Caiden pushed open the gates and the boys stumbled out into the blizzard.
