Knife spent a lot of time with Sunstorm and, as the weeks passed, they became extremely close friends. One day, when they were out on another flight through the icy mountains, the golden dragon suggested that they land beside a lake and rest for a while.

They stayed there for hours, catching fish and playing in the thick snow, enjoying the freedom of being outside without their parents watching them constantly. Finally, the sun began to set and the two dragons, exhausted from playing, started the long flight home to their village.

They landed tiredly outside Knife's cave and prepared to say goodbye to each other for the night. But Sunstorm didn't want to leave.

'It's getting dark,' murmured Knife, gently nuzzling her with his nose. 'You ought to go home before your parents start to worry.'

Sunstorm ignored this and instead nuzzled him in return. It was truly dark by then - the night sky was clear and empty. The golden dragon whispered, 'I love you, Knife.'

Then she quickly turned and took flight, disappearing into the darkness, returning to her own parents' cave. Knife could only stare after her in surprise.

'Knife!' he heard his mother, Corona, shouting. 'Hurry and come inside! It's freezing out there!'

The silver dragon sighed and obeyed his mother, but all he wanted to do was find Sunstorm again, and tell her that he loved her in return.

The next morning, Knife awoke earlier than anyone else in his village. He hadn't slept the night before. He didn't normally sleep a lot, but this was even worse than usual.

He left his parents, who were still fast asleep, and flew across the village to where Sunstorm's cave stood. He really wanted to speak to her again. But when he landed outside the dark cavern entrance, he stiffened with shock and fear - there were humans inside Sunstorm's home.

Humans with swords, and guns.
