He and his siblings were orphans raised by autobots. After finding out their father was Starscream, Stormrust understood why he felt like he didn't belong. His sister was unable to stop him from leaving, but was able to prevent her other brother, Scorchstrike, from doing so.
Alrhough Starscream is disappointed his son is a grounder, he makes up for it with brute strength and power, as well as being very much like him in personality. He'll often help his back with his devious plans, and prevent him from sc.rewing up. He's also protected his dad from Megs, since he has gained the Con Lord's favor.
