Their village lay in the snow-topped mountains of the far North. It was always winter, ice constantly coated the ground, and food was difficult to find. Both dragons and humans lived in this village, but the dragons suffered greatly, because there was not enough food to keep them alive and healthy.

'It's growing colder,' whispered a silver dragon with green spikes on her neck. 'Our child will not survive.'

She turned to nuzzle her beloved mate, a black dragon who was trembling from the cold. He nuzzled her in return and said, 'Don't worry, Corona. We'll find a way to protect our son, even if we must give him all our food.'

Corona sighed reluctantly. 'Very well. We shall do our best. I trust you, Sleet.'

Together, the two dragons walked back to their frozen cave in the village, where their precious egg was hidden. An egg which - in just a few days - would hatch into a wonderful baby dragon.

Corona lay down beside the egg and wrapped her tail around it to keep it warm. Then she fell asleep while gazing at it.

Her mate, Sleet, left the cavern and flew away into the bitter-cold mountains to hunt for some prey. He knew that when their son hatched, he would need as much food as possible, otherwise he would die within minutes.

Corona slept on while her mate was out hunting. As she slept, a tiny crack began to split apart the thick white shell of the egg, and the baby dragon pushed its muzzle out into the fresh air. It was already hatching...
