After One-Ear's unexpected death, the dragons fell into chaos. Several of them left in search of new lives, and it took weeks before the ragged remnants of our Pack finally pulled themselves together and lived normally again.
It was in the midst of this chaos that I grew closer with Seaflight. She would tell me little about her past, but I did find out that she had never seen her parents. Just like me, she had been abandoned. The realisation that we shared similar lives helped to bring us closer together, and I found comfort in knowing that Seaflight understood me in a way no-one else could.
The dragon I had once hated and mistrusted had now become my greatest friend.
In fact, I even began to consider her as an adoptive mother. I didn't know what it was like to have loving parents, and during moments where I felt despair over One-Ear's death, I often turned to her for reassurance.
But I should have known that my simple life couldn't stay peaceful.
For several weeks, I had noticed a new tension forming between myself and Loner. The black dragon had been my very first friend; despite his quiet and solitary nature, he had made me feel welcome in the Pack. But now things were different. He never spoke to me anymore. It was like we had never been friends at all.
One day Loner came to me and said, 'Tigertail. I have news.'
I heard his distinctive hoarse voice and looked at him in surprise. 'Loner, what's the matter?' I asked immediately.
He coughed uneasily and responded, 'I am leaving the Pack. I cannot stay without One-Ear. He was the only dragon I felt any loyalty to, and without him I have no reason to stay.'
My mind was spinning. I couldn't lose one of my best friends! 'Loner, please wait!' I cried. 'You don't have to leave. I'll become the new Pack leader. Then you'll be able to stay. You're loyal to me, aren't you? You're my friend...'
I trailed off into silence, already seeing the answer in the black dragon's scarlet eyes. 'I am sorry,' he said, not sounding sorry at all. 'I do care about you... but not enough to make me stay.'
And with a flap of his wings he turned and walked away. As I watched him go, I felt an unexpected rage boiling and simmering in the back of my throat. I felt like I was being betrayed. How dare Loner abandon me when he was supposed to be my friend?!
Before I knew what I was doing, I had extended my claws and launched myself at his back...
Great writing here! I always appreciate good grammer too :] and yeah, wolves are often over done, and over used. But I find the wolf pack society fascinating, along with their beauty. I hope my wolves are a little different though :)
