Sheik is definetly Zelda who is female. Zelda dresses up as Sheik who APPEARS to be male. Think about it, if Zelda walks out in plane sight with no disguise, things would be bad. She couldnt let anyone know she was actually Zelda so thats why people refer to her as a male.

I think Link is totally into crossdressing, and that's all. If he falls for Zelda, it's when she's dressed (very convincingly) as a teenage boy. He himself wears a tunic and leggings combo that are the but of many a skirt joke, and he has the ga*est dang hat EVER. Whether he's into guys or just girls dressed as guys, you better believe it's Zelda wearing the pants in their relationship.
