Seaflight would not talk to me about her past, but I learned many things on my own. By speaking to the other dragons in the Pack, I discovered that Seaflight had been one of its very first members, and that she had been adopted by One-Ear after he rescued her from her cruel parents.
After learning this, I found it was easier to trust her. Like me, she had once been an outcast - hated and shown no love or affection by her parents. I felt sorry for her.
In the cold grip of winter, two years after I joined the Pack, something happened.
One-Ear - who had been growing older and weaker in the last few months - caught a rare illness that only dragons could suffer. I noticed immediately when he fell sick. The other Pack members became nervous. They were afraid that they might lose their leader.
Seaflight became almost frantic in her efforts to save One-Ear; he meant a lot to her, being her adoptive father. But nothing she did could help him, and on one particularly frosty evening, he finally died. I remember little of that moment. All I remember is watching from a distance as Seaflight and One-Ear exchanged parting words that I couldn't hear.
Then the old green dragon collapsed to the snowy ground, his eyes locking with mine for a split second before they turned lifeless and empty. One-Ear, the wise dragon who had rescued amd cared for me, was gone.
Seaflight threw back her head, pointing her muzzle at the darkening sky, and howled. It wa a high-pitched, mournful keen, horrible to listen to.
Dusk fell, and the dragons of the Pack grew busy as they worked to bury their beloved leader.
In a state of numb shock, I walked over to Seaflight. She glared at me, her aqua eyes furious. 'Leave me alone!' she snarled. 'You always hated me anyway, pup.'
But I couldn't leave. My own grief at One-Ear's death was too strong. I moved closer, curling my neck around hers in the dragon equivalant of a hug. Together, we gazed at the empty stretch of ground where One-Ear had once been, and was now dead and gone.
My entire body shook with grief, and I buried my nose in Seaflight's thick mane, the scent of it comforting me. She never moved nor spoke.
Dusk turned to night, black and cool and calm. The frost settled on my wings.

I made no sound. I only stood and stared.

It was better to mourn together than alone.
