In the aftermath of the battle, the dragons of our Pack took some time to rest and recover from their injuries. Loner in particular would take a long time to fully heal. I remembered how he had attempted to save me from Darkscar, and resolved to thank him when he awoke. As of now, he was still unconscious, being tended to by the Pack's healers.
I continued travelling with the Pack for several weeks. Nothing else happened, but the constant flying made me stronger. I was no longer the runt I had once been; I could look at my reflection in a pool of water and feel a warm surge of pride for the dragon I had grown into.
During these weeks I felt myself growing closer to Seaflight. After she had courageously saved my life in the battle, I found it was easier to trust her. We were not friends, exactly - but I hoped we could become friends one day. I no longer hated her.
One sunlit evening, the Pack was resting in the mountains after a hard day of travelling. I was sitting on the grass beside Loner, who was ignoring me - but that was normal for him. It was peaceful, and quiet, and I was ready to fall asleep. But then I heard another dragon walking towards me, and I whipped around, a defensive growl rumbling in my throat.
'Calm down, pup,' a familiar sneering voice said. I relaxed a little; it was just Seaflight.
'What do you want?' I questioned.
'Oh, nothing. I only wanted to ask you about something,' the blue dragon replied with a careless shrug. 'You were abandoned by your parents, weren't you?'
I narrowed my eyes angrily. How had she known that?
Seaflight wasn't frightened by my show of anger. 'Not much,' she responded. 'I heard One-Ear mention that he found you alone on the moors, abandoned because you were a weakling and your parents didn't want you.'
I could feel myself trembling with pure rage. 'It's none of your business what my parents did,' I whispered.
'Oh, I think it is,' chuckled Seaflight. 'It's nice to find someone who was abandoned... just like I was.'
She stood up and walked away without another word. I watched her go. My rage was slowly fading, replaced by confusion. Was Seaflight more similar to me than I had originally thought?
...Did she understand me in a way no-one else could?...
