"It worked..." Kiru, sprawled out on the charred sand, swore loudly. "The dam.n thing worked..." His yellowish eyes were squinted against the blazing sun. "You doubted it?" the deer sitting beside him was playing with a shard of sha.ttered glass. "Not really..." the wolf trailed off, not changing his position. "I've never used it before, though." His companion shrugged. "Fist time for everything, I guess." He didn't like talking much. Sheilding his eyes, the anthro looked up at the dusty sky. "We're done here. Let's get going." -not done-
"Good idea." the wolf slowly rose to his feet. The vision had left him shaken. Some of the things he had seen were strangely familiar... Kiru had a sudden sensation of foreboding. He straightened his cloak and shook some of the dark sand out of his pale fur. Also standing, the deer slung his pack over his shoulder and checked the two blades strapped to his back. Taller than the canine, he looked out of place in the dry, flat desert. Slowly he turned east, toward the village where they lived. The deer sighed quietly. The sun was setting quickly, and a cold wind had begin to blow. It whistled on the edges of his swords and ruffled his fur, but the rest of the world was quiet. Too quiet. The warrior felt none of the foreboding that gripped his friend. He knew what was coming. And he knew that, no matter how fast they moved, the two would arrive too late. -kinda not done-
The village was burning. The sulfur-scented smoke rose in thick columns into the sky, black as storm clouds against the blood red sunset. The two travellers hesitated atop a sand dune, watching hungry flames consume the settlement. Kiru's mouth hung slightly open, his eyes were filled with horror. "I-isi..who did this?" the deer flinched at the use of his name, but he didn't reply. With the unsettling swish of steel against leather he drew the swords from their sheaths. "..." He had seen these flames before, long ago, reflected in a bowl of frozen water. /Fire, ice. Light and dark. Life and dea.th./ the deer hesitated. This place had haunted him for many years. He had been afraid, yet he had come here every season, playing with fate, testing its power. Now he would finally pay the price for his foolishness. And his knowledge, he silently added. For a moment he felt his life turn with the flip of a coin, the toss of a d.ie. Cursing himself for his cowardice, the anthro ignored his companion's terrified gaze. Pulling out a short dagger, he tossed it to the wolf. The deer turned around, away from the flames. Already skidding down the slope, Isi the warrior looked back over his shoulder. "Good luck." he said. No more. -end for today-
