I have a suggestion for you regarding realism because I think you may like this idea... if you look at my recent picture of a bmw car I drew it started out very cartoony but ended up realistic. If you watch the replay once I got the lines and overall color of the car I went back in and added the subtle highlights/shadows/reflections and got rid of most of the lines. One of the main things about realism is there aren't outlines around most things in real life. It's the color and light variations that make things stand out. But I found starting with the more cartoony style helped my accuracy a bit.
