Four months after I joined the Pack, our first great battle occurred. There had been skirmishes before in the past, of course; a large group of dragons could not travel anywhere without detection. Several times we encountered enemies, mostly lone dragons who hoped to gain some glory for themselves by killing our leader, One-Ear. But we always banded together and defeated them, each new triumph sending a burst of pride through my young heart.

I was still undersized, but I had grown faster and stronger during my time spent in the Pack. Ever day, I trained against the other dragons in mock battles to increase my power. I was happy, proud to be part of their Pack - my first real family.

The only thing that worried me was Seaflight. I could not bring myself to trust her. Even after she had been living with the Pack for months, I still feared that she would turn tail and betray us some day.

It was the height of summer. The sun's warmth was almost overpowering, and the dragons were taking the day off to relax, basking in the cool grass beneath the shadow of a mountain.

Everything was quiet, with only a faint birdsong to disrupt the air. I laid my head down on the ground and sighed contentedly. This was the kind of day that made me truly happy.

Then, all of a sudden, One-Ear pointed his muzzle at the sky and roared a warning. All the other dragons instantly sprang to their feet, agitated by the noise. My mind was racing; had something happened?

'My Pack!' bellowed One-Ear. 'Ememies are approaching! Prepare to fight!'

I looked up. Sure enough, a swarm of dark dragons were rapidly approaching through the sky. It was a rival Pack. But it was so much larger than ours.

The leader of the enemy Pack landed in front of us. He had dark-blue scales and horrible glowing crimson eyes. He looked directly at One-Ear and his jaws fell open in a grin.

'Greetings,' he hissed. 'My name is Darkscar.'

'What do you want?!' One-Ear growled in his deep, accented voice.

'We want nothing from you,' laughed Darkscar. 'We only wish to see you gone.'

On that last word, he launched himself straight at us, claws extended. The rest of the enemy Pack howled in delight and gave pursuit. I gritted my teeth and flared out my wings, preparing to defend my life.
