For a time, life among the Dragon Pack was calm, uneventful, even peaceful. One-Ear (who was the pack's leader) introduced me to everyone else. Much to my surprise, most of the dragons welcomed and respected me. It was confusing. How could I befriend them? They were all great and powerful dragons, with sharp claws and strong wings, while I was just an undersized runt. How could they accept me so easily?
Slowly, I learned about them all. One-Ear, the leader, was powerful and wise, drawing respect and admiration from the other creatures. Loner, the strange black dragon, was silent and solitary, never speaking to anyone.
For a time, there was peace. But I should have known that peace could not last forever.
Two weeks after I was accepted into the Pack, something happened that completely changed the way I viewed the world.
We had stopped beside a river to drink and hunt for fish. It was a rare treat that we all enjoyed, and was given only with One-Ear's permission. I joined Loner as we stepped into the water to catch our meal. As always, he was silent, his bright crimson eyes entirely emotionless. He unnerved me, but I had resolved to control my fear and hunt with him anyway.
'Loner, have you caught anything yet?' I asked nervously. He didn't reply. I cast a sideways glance at him. His eyes were brighter than usual and he was staring off into the horizon as though listening to a sound.
'Loner?' I cried, very alarmed now.
Then he spoke the first words I had ever heard from him. 'Gather the pack,' he said in a low, hoarse, rattling voice. 'Enemies approach.'
