She woke with a start, her chest heaving with each gasping breath. Muscles twitched beneath the cheetah's spotted pelt as flies crawled along her lithe body. She flicked her ear at the tickling sensation of the winged pest that had crawled into it, and blew hot air out of her nostrils. Sitting up and stretching in the faint moonlight a brief thought flashed through her mind; what had woken her? Had it been a nightmare? Perhaps the scent of lions nearby? No, it wasn't anything of that nature, but she still hadn't the slightest notion as to what it had been.
Kohaku, the cheetah, felt an odd weight on her shoulders. It was a feeling similar to the pressure that builds up before a great storm. When you feel the heat just before a flash of lightning is released and the thunder bellows loudly, resonating throughout the land.

Kohaku curled her upper lip, drinking in the scents of the still night air. It was surprisingly warm for an autumn night in the grasslands, she thought. Her amber gaze flitted left and right as she searched for any movement that would signal danger. There was nothing. It was eerily quiet, and her instincts told her to stay put, but she ignored them.
Oddly, there were no crickets, mice, or even the occasional laughter of a hyena. The night was much too still, that it even seemed as if the Earth were holding its breath. Kohaku flicked her tail, getting to her paws. She trotted swiftly through the tall grass, her mouth open to smell any predators or prey.
The female was heading East, in the direction of a human village. Most animals would have avoided that place, and other settlements like it, at all costs. But Kohaku was different. She had been raised by one of the chief's sons after he had rescued her from a pack of wild dogs. Kohaku had only been three moons old at the time, and would have certainly been buzzard-food had the young male not come.
He had taken her to the village, where he had gotten his wife to help nurse the cub back to health. Grateful, Kohaku had stayed for the next year, guarding the human children, helping the warriors hunt, and generously performing other kind deeds. After some time, however, she had left to be on her own. Kohaku still visited the village often, since she relished all of the attention she recieved.
Suddenly, she felt a tightness in her stomach. No, she wasn't pregnant, nor did she have to make dirt. The feelibg was similar to the knots in her stomach that formed when there was danger around. Kohaku didn't smell anything nearby, but the odd sensation didn't leave her.
As if pulled by some other force, she stared intensely at the dark sky. A comet tore through the night like a cat's claw tears into the tender flesh of a freshly kiIled mouse. It left a green trail through the sky, unlike anything Kohaku had ever seen before
As the green trail faded, the she-cat's amber eyes narrowed. "Was that a sign of some sort? An omen, perhaps?" she wondered. Her tail swished to and fro, but stiffened at the snap of a twig behind her.
Kohaku barely had time to wheel around before a sharp pain shot up her leg. Pain bloomed behind her eyes, and she toppled over.
